Emissions and renewable energy policy, carbon brokering and international carbon reduction programmes

Nicola first worked on greenhouse gas emissions when assisting Dr Michael Grubb at the Energy and Environmental Programme at the Royal Institute of International Affairs (RIIA) in London in 1989, having just spent two years teaching in Sudan.  In 1994 she joined the UK’s Association of Electricity Producers and helped design the UK’s Emissions Trading Scheme and the UK’s Renewables Obligation.  (She later won an award in 2005 from the AEP for having introduced emissions trading to the UK electricity industry.)  She sat on the Confederation of British Industry (CBI)’s Energy Policy Committee, was a member of the CBI’s Climate Change Working Group in the late 1990s and a member of the Advisory Committee on Business and the Environment, a group set up by Michael Heseltine MP for business to advise UK Government.

Nicola joined CantorCO2e, Cantor Fitzgerald’s green arm, in 2001 heading Business Development, helping develop the company to be a leading global environmental brokerage firm.  She worked on voluntary carbon markets from their inception, closing deals first in 2002 and helping design standards.  As Senior Vice President, she initiated the company’s presence in India that led to it establishing three offices there, was responsible for the company’s work related to UK renewable energy and power, helping place several hundred megawatt of renewable generation and working in the early biomass for co-firing markets.

She began to focus on realising carbon reduction opportunities in Africa in 2008 and is continuing this now in her own companies, working in Africa and elsewhere.  A key focus is establishing and scaling up efficient cook-stove projects using carbon finance and she has founded the not for profit For Stoves www.forstoves.com which enables projects to receive Certified Emission Reductions.

Nicola has a BA in French and German from Reading University and an MSc in Economics at Birkbeck College, University of London.  She has given numerous presentations on carbon finance and renewable energy and published articles and edited books including in 1992 editing Sustainable Development and the Energy Industries: Implementation and Impacts of Environmental Legislation (Earthscan).
